Ages 12-14: Benefits of Waiting

What’s the big deal about sex? Everybody on TV seems to be doing it and it just seems fun!
Sex involves a lot more than is shown in TV relationships. While it is a way to show committed love, and indeed can be very “fun,” it also carries with it the possible consequences of pregnancy and STI/STD transmission. Getting involved in sex early on may short circuit some future choices. The emotional aspect of sex outside of a committed relationship such as marriage can be difficult if not impossible for a young person to handle.

Work with your son or daughter to write out the benefits of abstinence:

  • Avoid pregnancy and STIs/STDs
  • Don’t have to worry about any emotional pain
  • Avoid getting a bad reputation at school
  • Have time to build positive relationships with lots of other people
  • Upholds your values
  • Won’t disappoint adults in your life.

How do I know when I’m ready to have sex?
Even though your body may seem ready for sex, as a person, you will be ready for sex only when you can handle all the responsibilities and consequences associated with it.
