Students Today Aren't Ready for Sex

S.T.A.R.S. stands for Students Today Aren’t Ready for Sex. The program is an abstinence based program through the Multnomah County Health Department that provides services to forty-eight middle schools and high schools in the Multnomah County. The program focuses on the social and peer pressures students face to become sexually involved through teaching a developmentally appropriate curriculum to sixth, eighth, and tenth grade students.
The S.T.A.R.S. program brings trained staff along with high school students, into the classroom to guide discussions and activities centering on the concept of “it’s a better choice to postpone sexual involvement.” High school students act as teen leaders and are critical to the success of this program because they are natural role models and credible messengers for the young people they reach.
During the presentations students discuss the pressures teenagers face today, how to assess their risk by looking at the consequences and how their choices will affect their future plans, increase their decision making skills, learn how to say no effectively, and gain confidence in their ability to be in control of their lives.
