- Relying on statistics - teen are not likely to remember them!
- Lecturing about how sexual standards were better when you were young.
- Using fear tactics.
- Putting on a guilt trip. Teens know when they are being manipulated, and it tends to foster rebellion.
- Not explaining your views.
- Yelling, shouting, or arguing.
- Jumping to conclusions.
- One-sided conversations.
- Judging - you can be clear about values and expectations without judging or dismissing someone else’s. If you appear judgmental towards friends or teachers, your child may dismiss what you are saying.
- Pretending you know the answer to a difficult question if you don’t. In the long-run, this may give your child misinformation or create a lack of trust. You can always tell your child that you are not sure, but will find out the answer for them.
