  • Lecturing about how sexual standards were better when you were young.
  • Using fear tactics.
  • Putting on a guilt trip. Teens know when they are being manipulated, and it tends to foster rebellion.
  • Not explaining your views.
  • Yelling, shouting, or arguing.
  • Jumping to conclusions.
  • One-sided conversations.
  • Judging - you can be clear about values and expectations without judging or dismissing someone else’s. If you appear judgmental towards friends or teachers, your child may dismiss what you are saying.
  • Pretending you know the answer to a difficult question if you don’t. In the long-run, this may give your child misinformation or create a lack of trust. You can always tell your child that you are not sure, but will find out the answer for them.
